The Olive Harvest
In the past month, more Palestinian farmers have requested our accompaniment than ever before, and here’s why: Olive trees bear fruit in a two-year on/off cycle. While last year the crop was light, this year the farmers see their trees dripping with rich fruit. Yet harvesting alone poses an increased risk of settler violence. With your help, they will not harvest alone.
From October 9 through the end of November, Rabbis for Human Rights will organize daily harvesting sessions for volunteers to accompany Palestinian farmers and help them pick their crops safely. Last year, over 1,200 volunteers came to harvest in 35 communities. For our Palestinian partners, the olive harvest is not just a livelihood, but memory, belonging, and a reason to stay on their land. It is the fulfillment of an intergenerational promise to care for trees planted by ancestors. This year, the actualization of that promise is at stake alongside the crop.
