Rabbis for Human Rights is the voice of Jewish tradition in the field of human rights. The organization was founded in 1988 (5749) and today has over 170 members\u2014ordained rabbis, rabbinical students, and rabbinic leaders.<\/p>\n

The organization is non-partisan and uniquely activist, bringing together rabbis from across all denominations and rabbinical schools in Israel. Among its members are rabbis in public roles, educators, and community rabbis, who are able to generate both grassroots and conceptual change.<\/p>\n

The organization serves as a tool to disseminate information about human rights in Israel and in the occupied territories, working in cooperation with human rights organizations in Israel and abroad. From its founding, it has acted to promote the rights of vulnerable groups in society, to protect the rights of minorities in Israel as well as Palestinians in the territories, and to prevent blatant violations of the basic rights of migrant workers. The organization puts pressure on policymakers in Israel to ensure the safeguarding of human rights, including the right to healthcare, shelter, education, and a minimal standard of living.<\/p>\n

Since its establishment, thousands of volunteers have taken part in hundreds of justice-oriented initiatives across the state and society.<\/p>\n

The organization\u2019s work reflects its members\u2019 conviction that as Jews we are obligated to protest any injustice inflicted on any human being, and to prevent it wherever possible\u2014a conviction rooted in the belief that every person is created in the image of God. We believe we are duty-bound to make the Israeli public aware of every human rights violation, and that our role is to pressure state institutions to rectify such injustices.<\/p>\n

Our authority is drawn from two primary sources: Jewish humanistic tradition and international human rights conventions. Alongside efforts to prevent rights violations, Rabbis for Human Rights brings an original, humanistic interpretation of Jewish texts into Israeli public discourse. At a time when nationalist, violent, and separatist readings of Jewish tradition are prominent, we give expression to Judaism\u2019s traditional responsibility for the well-being of the stranger, the different, and the vulnerable\u2014the stranger, the widow, and the orphan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

Social activist and storyteller, writer and community leader, Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie is the Co-Founding Spiritual Leader of the Lab\/Shul community in NYC and the creator of the ritual theater company Storahtelling, Inc. Israeli born, he\u2019s been living in New York since 1998. He received his rabbinical ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 2016, the 39th generation of rabbis in his family \u2014 the first one to be openly queer. Rabbi Amichai is the star of Sabbath Queen, Sandi DuBowski\u2019s award-winning documentary film, 21 years in the making, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Lana is a graduate of two rabbinical seminaries \u2013 Israeli Rabbinical Program of the Shalom Hartman Institute and the HaMidrasha in Oranim \u2013 as well as a graduate of Hebrew Union College (HUC). Between 2023-2025, she served as the rabbi and educational director of Congregation Or Ami in Los Angeles. Prior to moving to the United States, she was the head of the rabbinical network and educational projects at Rabbis for Human Rights, where she currently continues to serve on the board of directors. His studies focus on 21st-century theological transformations and the impact of 20th-century French philosophy on these changes. Rabbi Haviva Ner-David<\/b> is a post-denominational rabbi, spiritual companion, writer and activist. She is the founder of Shmaya: A Mikveh for Body, Soul and Spirit, the only public mikveh in Israel not under the control of the Chief Rabbinate, where she conducts both traditional and innovative ceremonies. Haviva has published six books, all with spiritual content (two novels, three autobiographies, and the only children’s book on mikveh). A further book of hers is due out next year (a book to help engaged couples prepare for their wedding and their marriage), and she is now working on an autobiography covering life since October 7. As a social activist, Haviva is highly active in the Standing Together movement; serving as head of the field and leadership team of her local circle, and coordinating for the movement at the national level. Five years ago she founded, together with one of her daughters, an Israeli support group working on behalf of people with FSHD, a muscular dystrophy that Haviva has lived with since childhood and passed on to two of her children. She has been active in Rabbis for Human Rights for decades, and sat on the board more than twenty years ago when she lived in Jerusalem, and glad to join the board once again. Haviva lives on Kibbutz Hannaton, has been married to Jacob for 36 years, and they are parents to seven children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Rabbi Rivi Dror<\/b> has been a community rabbi at “Beit Tefila Israeli” since 2023, and is an educator in pluralistic Jewish-Israeli culture. Over the years she has taught, facilitated and developed educational and community programs, combining the worlds of theater, culture, and Judaism. Rivi is a graduate of the Beit Midrash for Israeli Rabbinate of the Shalom Hartman Institute and HaMidrasha at Oranim. She works to create a more open and welcoming Israeli Judaism through study, ritual, culture and song. She believes in a humanistic, moral and egalitarian Judaism that sees every man and woman as entitled to a life of peace, dignity, justice, compassion, growth, equal opportunity and flourishing. Rabbi Reuven Greenvald<\/b> is the director of the Year-in-Israel program of Hebrew Union College, a first-year program in Jerusalem for rabbinical and cantorial students who will be ordained in the United States after five years of study. Before his work at HUC, Reuven worked in Israel engagement at the URJ (the Union for Reform Judaism) and at the Jewish Agency for Israel. Before that, he served as head of two leading Jewish day schools. Reuven was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) and was a Jerusalem Fellow at the Mandel Institute for Leadership here in Jerusalem. Rabbi Shoshana Cohen<\/b> has taught for nearly twenty years in batei midrash in Jerusalem. She served as a senior teaching faculty member at the Conservative Yeshiva, where she taught Talmud, Midrash, and gender studies. She worked as rabbi of the Hevruta mechinot at the Hartman Institute, where she teaches and holds a position as a research fellow. Shoshana founded TAKUM, a beit midrash for social justice, and Yeshivat Talpiot, a religious egalitarian yeshiva. Today she develops and oversees educational initiatives with T’ruah in Israel. Rabbi Shira Levin<\/b> is a rabbi at the synagogue on Kibbutz Hannaton and director of the communities division at HaMidrasha at Oranim, HeChalutz, and a graduate of the Hartman Institute Beit Midrash for the Israeli Rabbinate. Shira grew up in Jerusalem in the Masorti (Conservative) community “Ramot Zion” in French Hill, was educated in the NOAM youth movement and at Ramah NOAM summer camp, and after her army service went on a year-long shlihut for the Masorti movement to Melbourne, Australia. Alongside her rabbinic and educational work, Shira is a lawyer and worked in the public service in legal bureaus. She is a graduate of the Faculty of Law at the Hebrew University, and holds an MA in Talmud and gender from the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies. Shira studies Torah, writes, officiates life-cycle ceremonies, and leads Jewish education for children and youth on Kibbutz Hannaton and at summer camps.
