Human Rights in the Occupied Territories
The Return to Bir El Id
20.11.09
Last Shabat, there was another attempt by settlers to attack the shepherds of Bir El Id, who have just been returned to their Hirb'e, by our legal staff after ten years. This time they were repulsed. On Monday, the army detained one of the residents for five hours when he tired to take his children to school in Yata. Another returning family was not allowed in. After we intervened we were told that the residents were no longer allowed to use the access road they built themselves 20 years ago, that the army will prepare a new access road for them, and that in the meantime they should speak to the DCO to coordinate coming in or out. This is an extremely dangerous situation, which could lead to tragedy in case of a medical emergency, and there is a woman living there in an advanced stage of pregnancy. There is a need to bring in food and water, for the residents and their flocks, and children need to go to school, adults need to work, ect. We have petitioned the court on an emergency hearing on this matter, although the state attorney office had tried to claim this is not necessary and there is no problem. The army did open an alternative root, but it is usable only by 4X4 vehicles and even they may not be able to pass when the rains creates lakes. In addition the army plowed through the field of other family.
